Your Child's Attention Span

To succeed in adult life, your child will need to be able to focus on their work, study books, and read job-related manuals. Unfortunately, TV shows, videos, advertisements and gadgets are increasingly fast-paced, and geared to shorter attention spans.

There is a trend towards constant and changing stimuli. We even have video game plug-ins and DVD players in our cars and mini-vans. Gone are the days of playing I-Spy, or looking at the passing scenery on long road trips.

To train your children and to counter environmental variables, you must have your children do things that require focus and concentration; for example, reading books, doing crafts, and working on science projects.

If you try to get your children involved in things that take patience, and you find they cannot sit still for the period of time required, this could be evidence of a problem. You must be patient yourself, and keep pushing gradually until their attention span increases. Also, we must teach by example. Let your kids see you reading, and doing other tasks that involve focus, and they will follow your example.
