Bullying: Not a Normal Part of Growing Up
Much attention has been paid in the media recently to the issue of bullying. Most of us can remember a 'bully' from our grade school years, some of us may have been bullied ourselves, or witnessed others being bullied. Only recently have we become more aware of the serious consequences of bullying, and of the possible reasons why some children become bullies.
Some of our parents may have told us, when we were being bullied, things like: 'Oh, just ignore it' or 'You need to learn to stand up for yourself'. Chances are though, if your child is being bullied, he or she is not the only one.
Research shows that the best way to deal with bullying is through a comprehensive, school-wide program. Some of the ways you can help your child to deal with bullying, and to help them possibly avoid being victimized are: Encourage self-confidence; be aware of what is going on at school, and in your neighborhood; encourage open communication between yourself and your child.
