Driver's Education

Your children study a lot of things in school, and hopefully learn a lot too. One of the most important things they'll study is how to drive safely. Driving a car is probably one of the most dangerous things you'll let your kids do, but it's necessary as part of growing up, and also necessary for your sanity, so that you don't have to keep being a limo service!

Most public high schools offer driver's education, both classroom-based and "on the road" training. I took both back in High School, and neither the class nor the instructors were very good. I do remember a lot of "scare tactics" that probably did have a positive impact on me, but mostly I remember feeling very nervous. I ended up taking additional lessons from a private driving school before getting my license. Those lessons were very helpful.

One benefit you'll gain in having your child get their "driver's ed" certificate, is a slightly lower rate on your auto insurance. It cost a lot to add a new driver to your policy, but even more if they do not have that certificate!

Another type of course that is popping up lately is sometimes called "skid school". This class, taught mainly by professional drivers, is taught on a special course. The class is intended to teach students (both kids and adults) how to react in extreme driving conditions. Some insurance agencies may be offering additional discounts to their insureds who show that they have taken this course.

Make sure, when you send your kids out with their new license, that they know what they are getting themselves into. Make sure they take driving lessons!
