Martial Arts for Kids

When choosing an athletic activity for your children, consider what you want them to gain from the experience?Self-confidence, respect for rules, exercise and health benefits, a challenge for their mind and body, cooperative interaction with peers? the list could go on and on.

Different kids need different things out of their athletic experiences. Some kids do really well on team sports, while others may do better 'competing with themselves' for their own 'personal best'.

Martial arts, whether you choose Karate, Kung-Fu, Tae Kwon Do, or another tradition, can fulfill many needs for your child.

A good martial arts instructor will not only teach your child the 'moves', but will teach some life skills as well. The instructor may bring the kids into a group and give a short lesson about 'stranger danger', respecting others, or how to avoid a fight. (Yes, how to avoid a fight. Most martial arts schools are not going to teach your child to go out an fight!)

Martial arts can help your child with his self-confidence in many ways, such as feeling stronger, feeling more in control, knowing what to do and what not to do in the face of danger, and developing physical stamina and coordination.

You will want to choose a school that will encourage your child to progress at his or her own speed. You will want a school that rewards progress with promotion to higher-level belts and exercises. You will find that each child works at his or her own pace. The pride and joy on their faces when they achieve the next level is priceless!

Although the martial arts are largely a practice of self-discipline and self-improvement, children will learn team work and respect for their peers in a good martial arts program. There will be group activities, one-on-one activities, and some peer pressure at times to do well at an activity for the benefit of the group.
