Healthy Eating Tips

There are many 'fad' diets out there, from Atkins to South Beach, and now even the Nantucket Diet? I recently heard a man in the grocery store say that we should have the 'Revere Beach Diet'. (I guess that would include Pizza, Super Beef Sandwiches, Ice Cream, and Fried Dough. That sounds yummy, but probably not very healthy!)

When I was pregnant with my son I gained a lot of weight, more than my doctor was happy about! And, I'm embarrassed to say, my son was four by the time I really made an effort to lose the 'baby fat'. I guess I felt sort of helpless and overwhelmed with the task, until I realized that by making a few simple changes I could be healthier.

I did not join any clubs, or go on any fad diets, and I certainly did not use any drugs to help me with my weight loss. Basically, I followed a few simple rules of healthy eating; here are some of my tips:

Cut down on portions (one burger instead of two, skip the bun)

Include vegetables in every meal, and double up on your vegetable portions (maybe replace half of your French fries with extra green beans)

Snack between meals, on healthy items like cereals and fruits

Make sure to have some protein at every meal

Drink a lot of water

Drink a lot of Green Tea

Do not finish what your child leaves on his plate

Increase your healthy dairy intake (skim milk, fat free yogurt, low fat ice cream)

Allow yourself some small treats each day (a chocolate, a couple of chips)

Do not expect, or wish for, sudden or extreme weight loss ? gradual is better

Exercise a little bit each day

With these simple steps I was able to not only return to my pre-pregnancy weight, but actually go down to two sizes below what I had been before my pregnancy, within a couple of years. You can do it too!
