Matters of the Heart
If you are a woman in your 30s or 40s there are most likely certain health-related issues about which you are concerned. The one issue we often hear discussed in groups of 'middle aged' women is breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a big concern for many women, especially if you have a significant family history of the disease. Many of us do self-exams, most have regular exams once a year, and many have already begun our annual (or semi-annual) trips to the mammography center.
However, in speaking with a physician friend of mine recently, I learned that a bigger health risk for more women is heart disease. Make sure to talk to your doctor about any family history of heart disease. In addition, you can reduce your risk by exercising regularly, watching your diet, and being careful about substances such as caffeine and nicotine. Be sure to speak with your doctor about your risk factors, and about ways you can keep your heart healthy.
