You Should Seek Counseling!

Actually, everyone could probably benefit from some counseling or therapy sessions. We all struggle with stress due to work or home pressures, we all carry with us conflicts from our childhood that can impact our relationships and functioning as adults.

Therapy gives you a safe place to express your thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Therapists are trained to listen actively, to reflect back to you what you are saying, and to be somewhat of a neutral person with whom to talk.

Taking care of your mental and psychological well-being can have a positive impact on your physical health. Often stress can result in physical pain, stress-related illness, and weight issues (gain or loss).

Many times people enter therapy at a crossroads in their life, at a time when they are making an adjustment to a lifestyle change, or at a time when a significant decision must be made. At times people enter therapy to help with relationship issues at home, at work, or in their community. People also enter therapy to deal with such things as substance abuse, eating disorders, abusive relationships, mourning, and parenting struggles.

Usually health insurance will pay for counseling, with a small co-pay for which you will be responsible.

There are many counseling centers and individual therapists available. There does not seem to be a good way (that I can find) to locate therapists in your area by the internet. There is one site www.psychologytoday.com which has a "find a therapist" section, where you can search by state and by town. However the site does not have a lot of listings per area.

You can find a therapist in the phone book. You may want to ask your primary doctor for suggestions, or ask friends and relatives if they know of someone good. You should put some thought into the type of counselor you want to see, as philosophies may differ. You can opt for a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or counselor. You can also opt for individual, group, or marriage or family therapy.
