Upgrade Your Electrical System

One of the most important systems in your home is your electrical system. We use electricity every day to light our homes, watch television, cook dinner, and use our computers. An outdated electrical system can be a drain on resources, and can be a safety and fire hazard.

If your home still has old-fashioned fuses, upgrade as soon as possible to circuit breakers. Fuses are known by insurance underwriters to be a fire hazard. In fact, with fuses, you may have a hard time obtaining homeowners insurance. In addition, if you have ever 'blown a fuse' and had to replace it, you will find flipping a circuit breaker switch to be much easier.

If your home still has old, 2-prong outlets, have these replaced with 3-prong grounded outlets. Any outlets that are outside (even on a screened porch), or near a water source (e.g. kitchen or bathroom) should have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter), to help prevent fatal electrical shocks.

Always hire a licensed electrician to perform any of the above updates to your system.
