Sports Safety for Kids

We all know that sports can be beneficial for our children, but as parents we also worry about injuries and safety. What can you do to help your children stay safe and healthy, no matter what athletic activity they participate in? Well, here are a few tips to get you started:

First, remember, they are kids, not adults! Children should not be working out to the extent that an older player or adult would. Keep practices and games to a reasonable time.

Make sure kids are stretching out and warming up.

Remember, pain is a sign of injury. Always take any report of pain seriously, and treat it accordingly. Let a child sit out until they are ready to go back in. (Believe me, they probably have higher standards than we do, and will be ready before you know it!)

Swelling and limited motion are signs of a serious injury. Seek medical treatment immediately.

Watch out for overuse injuries (common in children who participate in multiple sports), and injuries brought on by growth spurts.

Always make sure kids are hydrated. Sports drinks are fine, but plain old ice-water does the trick too!

Make sure kids apply sunscreen when participating in outdoor activities.

Always follow specialized safety and equipment guidelines for your child's specific sport. Helmets, pads, mouth guards, and other special equipment may be required. Always check with your coach or league.
