If you are looking for bargains on clothing or household items you have many options. There are malls, stand-alone department stores and specialty stores right in your neighborhood. There are also a virtually unlimited number of 'stores' online, where you can shop from the comfort of your home.
Keep in mind that there is a significant 'mark-up' on any retail item that you purchase. For this reason, watching for special sales, 'mark-downs' and coupons can help you in your efforts to stick to a budget. For example, many stores put summer clothing on 'clearance' as early as July. So, if your son needs shorts, consider buying a couple pair in the Spring, and then some extras when they get marked down.
Often you will pay less by buying last year's stock out of season. This July, I bought a prior year's backpack for my son for only $7. He won't need it for another six weeks, but why pay $20 - $30 in late August when I can store it in his closet?
When shopping on line, you can check out 'auction' type sites such as Ebay or Overstock. Also watch for online specials from your favorite retailers. Some items are available 'online only'. Many retailers now post their sale circulars and even printable coupons online, so you can 'window shop' from home and then visit the store to make your purchase. Often you can download 'maps' of local malls and outlet centers, so that you can pre-plan your shopping trips, saving time and effort.
